Beautiful hand-carved soapstone figurine depicting a seated Thai Buddha displaying the hand gesture of Abhaya Mudra.
With the hand empty and free of weapons, the Abhaya Mudra symbolises protection, peace and the dispelling of fear. In the western world this gesture is known to mean Stop. In both cases, the gesture implies the same thing, fearlessness before a potential enemy. It is said that Buddha made this gesture immediately after gaining enlightenment. Later, when Buddha was confronted by an angry elephant, he held up his hand using the Abhaya Mudra gesture and immediately calmed it.
